Don’t Expect Too Much Tonight

With all the new negative ad’s being mcreleased this week, some are expecting an all out brawl tonight. When a voter asked McCain when he was going to start attacking Obama, he replied “How about Tuesday night?”

Don’t expect it. Tonight’s “debate” is in a town hall format, a forum that will most likely favor McCain’s style. Town hall debates have a moderator, but the audience is generally made up of uncommitted voters who will ask most of the questions.

If McCain or Obama turn this debate into a mudslinging contest, it will turn off those uncommitted voters and the initial and harshest attacker could lose though swing vote.

If you’re watching tonight, expect a very civil tone in which McCain & Obama address the viewers and the audience, not each other. You can also expect to learn quite a bit about the candidates and their plans tonight, something the other debates and campaign rallies will not provide.

I expect tonight to be civil and informative, as long as McCain doesn’t over-rely on flaunting his military experience, Obama doesn’t act like his speaking from the mountain tops (keeping oratory to a minimum and peaks as if he were having a normal conversation) and neither candidate goes negative.

What are you looking for tonight? What do you think each candidate needs to do in order to be successful in this format tonight?
